Austria has a very long tradition of thinking itself the “island of the blessed”. Proudly insulated from the troubles that affect most of the world. That is not completely undeserved. Even by first world standards, Austria offers a high protection from the greed of our “free market” system. This is shown in Austrian workers having acess to healthcare, education, low unemployment, high wages and high stability. Even during the 2008 crisis and even with all the damage that neoliberalism has done to the Austrian system, it has recovered much faster and suffered far less that most western nations.
At the same time, Austrian politicians routinely get incredibly low approval ratings, hovering under 20%.
